The
Great Allegheny Passage/ The Youghiogheny River Trail (YRT) is a beautiful asset to West Newton and the surrounding communities. The YRT, and most of the other trails that make up The Great Allegheny Passage, has been constructed on an old railroad bed. The trail has a limestone surface and is great for biking, hiking, walking and jogging. In the winter months, if Mother Nature is willing, this is a fantastic spot for cross-country skiing. The section from West Newton to Cedar Creek Park has a large grassy path for horseback riders. The trail is located on the West Side of the Youghiogheny River and connects to other trails to make up the Great Allegheny Passage. The Great Allegheny Passage connects Cumberland, MD to Pittsburgh, PA and currently provides 100 continuous miles of smooth surface with an additional 52-mile branch to the Pittsburgh International Airport. In Cumberland, MD the Great Allegheny passage connects to the C&O Canal Towpath providing continuous access to Washington D.C. DWNI is proud to have been a catalyst in creating the West Newton Chapter of the Regional Trail Corporation and continues to support the trail by providing plants and shrubs to beautify the trail head.
