The John C. Plumer House The Plumer House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 ( Building - #79002368). This house was designed by and residence of John C. Plumer of West Newton. It is located on the corner of Vine Street and Water Street. Significant years for this of interest are 1814 and 1846 in the area of exploration and settlement. There is one building on the property. The property is currently owned by the West Newton Historical Society. Downtown Storefronts West Newton's downtown business district has a number of historic commercial buildings that date back to the 19th Century including the Dick Building (on the National Registry and recently called the Cornerstone and G.C. Murphy's (fomer department store chain and voted by YPA as 2008 top 10 buildings to preserve). See other historic downtown structures in our "Tour of Downtown." The West Newton Cemetery Established in 1852, this cemetery was one of the first community-oriented cemeteries not ties to family or church and revered as one of the most beautiful in Pennsylvania. The orignal stagecoach entrance is along the GAP Trail. Pioneer Point Sculpture Funded in 2008 by the Pittsburgh 250th Celebration Committee, this sculpture, made of railroad spikes, represents an early pioneer that explored this region during the Northwest Territory Expedition and settled here to set up trade along the Youghiogheny River. 105th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Company E This troupe of reenactment enthusiasts depicts the Camp Guard of the J.C. Markle Post 6223, Camp 47 of the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War (part of the famous Wildcat Regiment of the third corp of the army of the Potomac).
